Farmhouses and cottages scattered across the 6 Estates are usually let unfurnished and on a long-term basis. A Private Residential Tenancy (PRT) is the only type of agreement used in Scotland to document the occupation of rented accommodation. The term for the PRT is open-ended. The Estates are long term landowners therefore farmhouses and cottages are maintained and improved to preserve capital values. Additionally, economies of scale usually mean that property maintenance, either in-house or done by 3rd parties, is at a higher standard and more efficient than is normal in other ownership and management structures. This is a considerable advantage to tenants and makes the Estates popular landlords. As responsible landlords, the Estates are also registered with Fife Council.
