Skylark on Balcaskie

Balcaskie has just received the results of its participation in the RSPB's Volunteer & Farmer Alliance initiative.  We have worked informally with the RSPB in the past but this is the first year in which we have formally participated in this excellent scheme.  The survey only takes places over a limited part of the Estate but even then over 21 species of birds were recorded.  These included Skylarks and Lapwings as well as more common Meadow PipitsReed BuntingsWeatears and Shovelers

We were particularly keen to participate this year because, having completed the planting of so many miles of new hedges we were keen to understand the baseline so that the effect (hopefully beneficial) of our new native hedgerows on local fauna can be measured in the future.

Balcaskie is very grateful to the RSPB and of course the individual volunteers who helped with this survey.
