School visit to Gilston Mains

Thursday 9 June 2011

RHET (Royal Highland Education Trust) all day school visit to Gilston Mains for 250 P6 children from Levenmouth Schools.

This will be the 4th year we have run the day for children from Levenmouth Primary Schools (Methilhill, Buckhaven, Mountfleurie, St Agathas and Kennoway). It is an annual expedition for children to learn about many aspects of life and work on a country Estate. It is a "show case" event for RHET and the Estate and we've had visits in the past from Cabinet Secretary Richard Lochead and Maureen Watt (when she was Minister for Schools and Skills).

The activities [which are planned to literally "feed the senses"] will be similar to previous years -  Forestry, Gamekeeping & Wildlife conservation, Pond dipping [where they all get wet!], Livestock, Cropping, Sheep shearing, machinery ..... and just to give the children a great day out enjoying the countryside and an experience they are unlikely to have in their daily lives.

45 volunteers attend on the day to make things run smoothly. It is a rewarding day for all who attend both pupils, teachers and volunteers.   We work with Elmwood College, BASC, Fife Police, Quaker Oats, Kettle Produce, Branston Potatoes, Tilhill, Quality Meat Scotland, Fife Countryside Rangers and a number of volunteer local farmers so it is very much a collaborative effort.
